Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution. The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems.

Use the (PS4 Remote Play) application to control your PlayStation®4 system from your computer. With this application installed on your PC or Mac, you'll enjoy immersive PlayStation® gaming while being connected remotely to your PS4™ system. Sign into the same PlayStation Network account you have on your PS4. You will now be able to use Remote Play from your Windows or Mac system. If the program fails to find your PS4, which is unlikely, you should have an 8 digit code appear on your screen. Ensure you are on the same network as your PS4, and follow the instructions.
We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective. For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players.
In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform. This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change.
We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward. In the meantime, please stay tuned for more information via PlayStation.Blog and social channels, including,.
@JMG24BAD I’d be incredibly surprised to see crossplay for Minecraft above all. While I won’t say No, its situation is a bit different.
Minecraft is owned by Microsoft and requires an XBL login to do crossplay. I’m not sure SONY is keen on making players log into an Xbox Live account on their PlayStation. But who knowsMaybe they wanna be very open? They did it once with Steam. But they didn’t (and likely still don’t) see Steam as a direct competitor. Like, do you think Microsoft will make their users log into their PSN account on Xbox One?
Didn’t think so. Minecraft is more complicated.
I don’t play fortnight but i still see this as a major victory. I feel like ms (last generation) and sony (this generation) have been reluctant to enable cross play because they see it as a competitive advantage to isolate their player base. Let me just say in case you are listening sony. There is nothing advantageous to a consumer to have a game with online play and no one to play with.
It generally has me avoiding buying online games for fear it will be worthless if the online community is too inactive. Please flex you advantages in the form of great exclusives like god of war, horizon, spiderman.
That will keep me a happy playstation gamer far more than anything else. Great move, this will actually help maintain the userbase as more platforms become gaming capable in the wake of game streaming. Make cross platform play a standard across all multiplatform games, so people can game with their friends regaurdless of where they play. Between this and Downloads for PlayStation Now, you guys are making the right moves for the future. You had me worried their for a little while, but I am glad you are listening to the market, and making moves that will ensure the future of PlayStation.
Now, please bring out an X86 based PlayStation Phone so we can take the PlayStation expereince with us wherever we go. Full PlayStation OS, no Android.
Then you can ensue mobile and social gamers have a place to play within the PlayStation ecosystem.
